Committed to Service at Post 800

American Legion Post 800 is proud to welcome Gary Vail as our new Post Commander.

Gary has called Idyllwild home since 2000, and his deep roots in this community are matched only by his commitment to serving it. A proud U.S. Navy veteran who served four years in defense of our nation, Gary joined Post 800 as a legacy member—following in the footsteps of his father, who honorably served during the Korean War. That sense of inherited duty is evident in everything Gary does. In just five months as a member of Post 800’s Honor Guard, he conducted 17 memorial services—a testament to the respect and dedication he brings to honoring our fallen heroes.

Beyond his service to the Post, Gary is a beloved figure in the Idyllwild community. A master tile setter with more than 40 years of experience, he is widely known for his generosity, his willingness to lend a hand, and his giving spirit. Whether he is honoring a fellow veteran at a memorial or contributing to the fabric of daily life in our mountain town, Gary leads with integrity and heart. We are honored to have him at the helm of Post 800, and we look forward to the meaningful work ahead under his leadership.
