On December 13, we celebrate the birthday of the United States National Guard, whose roots reach all the way back to 1636, making it the oldest component of our nation’s armed forces. For nearly four centuries, Guard members have carried a proud dual role, standing ready to protect their neighbors here at home when floods, fires, and storms strike, while also answering the call to defend our nation on distant shores. That steadfast commitment to both community and country reflects the very spirit we hold dear here in our mountain town.
